A baby was reportedly thrown off in the bridge by his mom in Ruzhou City, in central China's Henan Province.
Passersby yelled at other pedestrians to save the baby, and the taxi driver was the first to respond. He was driving across a bridge when he noticed a mother holding her baby close to the railing of the bridge. She didn’t appear to be in distress, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was very wrong.
Moments later, the taxi driver saw the woman toss the baby over the railing into the Jing River. The woman calmly walked away as her child started to sink into the murky water. The heroic driver then pulled his car over to the side, jumped into the water, and fastened a rope around the baby so he could be dragged back to safety.
People on the bridge hoisted the child back up to safety. They started shaking the toddler and slapping his back in an attempt to get the water out of his lungs.
The paramedics arrived shortly after and took him to hospital. The baby woke up following treatment and is now in a stable condition.
Authorities said the mother was suffering from a mental illness and are now investigating the case.
