Every year 15 million girls are married as children, denied their rights to health, education and opportunity, and robbed their childhood. What many people don’t realize is that children as young as 12 actually marry a much older partner in a few states.
As this issue rises, You Tube star Coby Persin set up a social experiment in New York City to see how people would react once they see an old man being married to a young girl.
Persin sets the scene in Times Square in New York City for a 65-year old man and his 12-year old bride. Donning a white dress and veil, the child bride stares vacantly at the ground as she poses for wedding photos with her much older groom.
The stunt gathered quite some crowd and many were left in dismay and causes an outrage, which clearly shows child marriage isn’t right. Once the bystanders realize what they’re actually seeing, tons of concerned adults jump in to help the girl.
Fortunately, this wedding wasn’t real. This child bride stunt was inspired by the original campaign done by a group called “KAFA” which shows the sad reality of child marriage, where thousands of young girls in Lebanon, Syria and around the world are forced into this sickening ordeal. Child marriages do happen every single day in countries all over the world.
Coby Persin captioned the video: “New Yorker’s didn’t stand for a child getting married to an older man and neither should anywhere else in the world will be ok with it!”
