Child Laborer Who Became Kara David's Scholar When He Was Only in 4th Grade Finally Graduated From College

A child laborer since five years old named Joselito Padilla lives in a remote island of Silaki in Pangasinan. Joselito and his sister Kristine used to dive for sea urchins everyday to send themselves to school. Their daily living depends on the sea urchin that they gather from the sea.

Kara David, a journalist, television host and a writer for GMA News' documentary show, 'i-Witness' featured the story of Joselito and his family. According to the documentary, the family have to help each other inorder to earn their daily living.

Joselito, who was only 10-year old and only in Grade 4 helped his father harvest the only source of their income. Sea urchins are sold for P140 per teaspoon in some Japanese restaurants but the documentary showed that the family only earns P80-P100 everyday for a sack full of sea urchins. This situation made it hard for Joselito to finish his studies.

Luckily, Joselito became Kara David's scholar under "Project Malasakit." When Project Malasakit took him in as a scholar, Joselito excelled in science and even won electronics competition beating students from other schools in Bolinao Pangasinan.

Ten years after GMA aired the said documentary, Kara David shared a picture of Joselito with his diploma together with her. Joselito finally graduated from college (BS Marine Transport). Congratulations our dear Joselito. Salamat sa iyongpagsisikap. Salamat din sa lahat ng donors”
