An American family has already been living in its 1940s-era house for some years. Bit by bit they have renovated every room. Now it's time for the basement. It starts out as tedious work that no one is looking forward to. But it ends up being the sort of adventure that everybody secretly dreams about.
To begin the renovations, the basement ceiling needs to be removed entirely. Massive dust is layered thickly behind the ceiling. The result of decades of accumulation.
But what's this? Hidden between ceiling beams they see a gray-green lunchbox.
A very thick layer of grime indicates that the tin has been here for quite some time. A moldy shoelace holds it together. What is concealed inside it? Jewelry, stocks, or just some old toys?
The suspense increases immeasurably as they open it. They gently pull on the shoelace.
The tin contains several packages wrapped in wax paper, wildly stirring up the family's imagination.
Underneath the bundles are a deeply yellowed newspaper: it's from March 25, 1951. The secret treasure must have been lying here, hidden and untouched, since then.
The shape of the packets has already inspired hope. On unwrapping them, the couple has their quiet suspicions confirmed: someone hoarded cash here. A fat wad of $20 bills awaits new owners.
But with the next bundle, a crazy situation gets even crazier: another wad appears, this time with $50 bills. And finally the last one, consisting exclusively of $100 bills. Added together, the family is staring at $23,000!
The bills are all from the years between 1928 and 1934. To be on the safe side, the couple hires a lawyer. But as it happens, the first owner of the house, an elderly woman, passed away some years ago. Then they can celebrate their unexpected bonanza. (They immediately invest it in further house renovations.) In this case good things really did come from above!
