A tourist bus carrying around 50 passengers, all students from Bestlink College of the Philippines in Novaliches, Quezon City were bound for a research field trip in a resort in Tanay, Rizal. According to the Tanay Police, the bus lost its brakes and bumped into an electrical post. Fourteen students were killed while 20 others were hurt in the said accident.
The students were bound for a camping activity at the Sacramento Adventure Camp in Tanay, which reportedly was part of the school's National Service Training Program.
The mishap took place in a blind curve on Magnetic Hill near Pelegrino Farm at around 8:40 a.m on Monday, February 20. The driver reportedly lost control of the bus after its brakes failed.
According to Engineer Carlos Inofre, chief of Tanay's Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO): "Pababa ito, galing sa Marcos Highway mataas, pababa ang bus, nawalan ng preno...Left side total wreck, immediate cause of death, tinamaan sila ng mga bakal...Parang napunta lahat sila sa likod, left side, 'yon po 'yong napuruhan na mga estudyante."
The bus driver who was critically injured is still at the hospital as of presstime. The bus was totally wrecked especially on the left side.
Survivors said they has smelled of burning rubber immediately before the accident.
